From October 28 to 31, Catania will host the annual international conference dedicated to addictions, with a specific focus on cigarette addiction and harm reduction strategies. The event will be coordinated by Prof. Pasquale Caponnetto and Prof. Maria Quattropani from the Department of Educational Sciences at the University of Catania.

Catania will host the 2024 edition of the Annual Meeting on Addiction, an international conference focused on research into addictions and the most effective therapies for mental health. This event brings together leading experts, researchers, and clinicians from around the world.

For the first time ever, the conference will take place in Italy. From October 28 to 31, in the beautiful setting of the Etnean city, researchers and clinicians from the most prestigious international academic centers will present the latest research on psychological addictions and treatments.

The event, organized by the University of Catania in collaboration with the Italian Anti-Smoking League, will be coordinated by Prof. Pasquale Caponnetto and Prof. Maria Quattropani from the Department of Educational Sciences at the University of Catania.

This year’s theme is “Health Empowerment by Harm Reduction,” exploring the opportunities presented by harm reduction strategies in addiction treatment, particularly cigarette addiction.

We are proud to host the conference,” says Prof. Pasquale Caponnetto. “The meeting represents an important opportunity for interaction and sharing, allowing us to evaluate the most innovative treatments in the field of addiction, particularly regarding cigarette smoking but also beyond. It is a great opportunity for the University of Catania to share clinical research results with an internationally renowned scientific network”.

The four-day event will feature researchers, residents, doctors, and students from across the region engaged in scientific discussions on pathological addictions, clinical psychology, health informatics, harm reduction for smoking, and the most effective strategies.

Speakers at the event will come from research centers at some of the most prestigious international universities, which are key institutions in the study of addiction, including faculty from the Moffitt Cancer Center, the University of Pittsburgh, Dartmouth College, and George Washington University.

The event will take place in some of Catania’s most beautiful locations, including Palazzo Ingrassia, the Monastery of the Benedictines, and the “Le Verginelle” complex.

Additionally, as part of the Annual Meeting on Addiction, on Wednesday, October 30, the National CoEHAR Conference will take place, promoted as every year to disseminate and promote the latest scientific research on harm reduction in smoking. The conference will be led, as always, by Prof. Giovanni Li Volti and Prof. Riccardo Polosa, respectively Director and Founder of CoEHAR.

On October 29 and 30, two days of training open to public (doctors, students, and industry experts) will be held at the Giancarlo De Carlo Auditorium at the Monastery of the Benedictines and the main auditorium of the University Hospital of Catania.
