CoEHAR members have addressed the Brazilian Senate to emphasize the potential of e-cigarettes as a public health tool and to advocate for a science-based approach to their regulation.

Brazil enforces strict regulations on e-cigarettes. Despite this, the product is widely used, and the consumption of devices purchased on the black market grows year after year.

In an attempt to bring order to this regulatory chaos, Senator Soraya Thronicke has proposed legislation to regulate the production, sale, import, and use of these devices. The proposal aims primarily to combat the black market and protect at-risk groups, such as young people.

Following the development of this issue, CoEHAR members decided to share their perspective by submitting a statement to the Brazilian Senate to highlight the public health potential of e-cigarettes and advocate for evidence-based policies, particularly those rooted in Brazilian research.

The letter outlines the reasons why e-cigarettes can serve as a valuable tool in the fight against smoking within a country’s health policies:

  • Le sigarette elettroniche come alternative a rischio ridotto
  • Riduzione del rischio di cancro, malattie polmonari e cardiovascolari
  • Tendenze globali nella regolamentazione e commercializzazione delle sigarette elettroniche
  • Convergenza scientifica sul potenziale per la salute pubblica

The researchers conclude:
“Based on the scientific evidence, regulatory practices in other nations, and the substantial reduction in health risks associated with e-cigarette use, we advocate for policies that provide adult smokers with access to safer alternatives. Through a regulated framework, Brazil has the opportunity to reduce the burden of smoking-related diseases and improve public health outcomes.”
