The Italian Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis (SISA) will hold a national conference on September 19, 2023 in Bari, Italy. The conference will focus on the study of dyslipidemias, which are among the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
The conference will bring together leading experts in the field to discuss the latest research on dyslipidemias and their management. Topics to be covered include the latest guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS), as well as innovative topics such as environmental risk factors, including smoking, and their role in the progression of atherosclerosis.
Among the speakers will be Professor Riccardo Polosa, founder of the CoEHAR, who will give a presentation on the impact of smoking on atherosclerosis.
“It is well known that conventional cigarette smoking causes serious damage to the endothelial system and can become a direct cause of hypertension and atherosclerosis,” said Polosa. “In light of the damage caused by conventional cigarette smoking and the failure of current anti-smoking strategies, several studies have shown that harm reduction approaches can provide important benefits to patients with these conditions. A recent study by REPLICA researchers showed that switching to non-combustible products reduces vascular damage and prevents the onset of smoking-related diseases such as atherosclerosis and hypertension”.
The conference will be co-chaired by Professor Piero Portincasa, Regional President of SISA for Puglia and Basilicata.
The final session of the conference will focus on non-pharmacological approaches to the management of cardiovascular risk, including lifestyle, physical activity, nutraceuticals, and nutrition. Specific topics to be discussed include the Mediterranean diet as a lifestyle that originates in Italy and should be adopted and exported, physical activity as a way to connect with nature and also has an ecological meaning, and the potential role of nutraceuticals.
