Ten of the world’s leading experts in diabetes addressed the issue of smoking harm in this vulnerable population in its clinical, medical, behavioral and sociological implications, in order to provide independent consultation and oversight to the development of smoking cessation / harm reduction guidelines for smokers with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
In the study, three psychological reasons for the onset of smoking were found and analyzed: feelings of stress, nervousness, and loneliness. Moreover, most of the women stated that they started smoking during adolescence or pre-adolescence. Quite unexpectedly, researchers were surprised to find out that there is a lot of distrust and little knowledge of official smoking cessation therapies, and because of this, participants stated that they can quit smoking whenever they want and only with their own willpower.
As a result, expectations are high for an event that is all about e-cigarettes, heat-not-burn and cannabidiol (CBD) products, pouches and other smokeless alternatives. From today 27th February until the 3rd March, eight researchers from 4 academic partners of the Replica project will be guests of the CoEHAR at the University of Catania to discuss research work and methodologies and to prepare the start of the activities. In the laboratories of the Biological Tower "F. Latteri", scientists from Indonesia, United States, Serbia and Morocco will have the opportunity to work with the most innovative research equipment in the world, establishing methods and standards operating procedures that will be shared with the international scientific community.
