No Tobacco Day, 31 May 2022: smoker number increased, concrete answers needed 

Yesterday, the Italian Ministry of Health released new data on smoking prevalence: there are 800000 more smokers in the country than in 2019. Rates increased especially among women and young people. The report found that also the numbers of the users of heated tobacco products and electronic cigarettes is rising. “An expected disaster, partly anticipated by our data published in 2020 and obtained thanks to a study conducted during the acute phase of Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, no prevention policies, no answers from the Italian health authorities. Reporting a disaster is not enough: we need to come up with alternative and effective solutions”. Stated professor Riccardo Polosa, founder of the CoEHAR, who opened the first National Conference on Tobacco Harm Reduction.

Catania, world capital of antismoking research: the CoEHAR mural

As a tangible demonstration of the gratitude towards the city that marked the beginning of the change, this morning CoEHAR presented the “CoEHAR Mural” along A.Doria Avenue (near INFN- Institute of Nuclear Physics). The mural is an artistic work created by the collective “MaleTinte”, thanks to the patronage of the Municipality of Catania and the Italian Anti-smoking League, LIAF, and the support of the BCC, Cooperative Credit Bank of Regalbuto and PPG Italy Group.

CoEHAR and ANPVU to Commissioner Kyriakides: ecig as aids for smoking cessation

Prof. Riccardo Polosa, Founder of the CoEHAR, and Carmine Canino, President of  ANPVU, National Association of ecig consumers, have sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides, regarding her statements on the effectiveness of e-cigarettes to quit smoking.

CoEHAR partnered with the giants of global pulmonology to develop a smoking and asthma algorithm to manage smokers with asthma

Overall, the study authors believe that smoking cessation has a positive effect on asthmatic patients' respiratory health: the longer you abstain from smoking, the better your asthma symptoms will be. Gradually, patients with asthma gain a higher quality of life as their exacerbations decrease.
