The University of Catania is proud to announce the upcoming international scientific conference titled “TYPE 2 Diabetes in Internal Medicine Practice: Experience Sharings 1”, which will take place on May 30-31, 2025, at the Romano Palace Hotel in Catania. This event will bring together over 100 specialists from the fields of internal medicine, diabetes, and public health health to discuss the latest advancements and challenges in diabetes care, with a particular focus on personalized medicine and tobacco harm reduction. Professor Seyit Uyar, President of the Internal Medicine Specialists Association (DAHUDER) in Turkey, will co-host the event with CoEHAR (Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction).
The conference will feature a comprehensive scientific program covering several key topics:
Pathophysiological Approach to Diabetes
Experts will explore the underlying mechanisms of diabetes, including the roles of insulin resistance, β-cell dysfunction, and the impact of environmental and genetic factors on disease progression. Presentations will highlight the latest research on the pathophysiology of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and how these insights can inform better management strategies.
Emerging Personalized Medicine in Diabetes Care
One of the key themes of the event will be personalized medicine in diabetes management. Speakers will discuss the latest breakthroughs in targeted therapies, such as DPP-4 inhibitorsand dual GIP/GLP-1 agonists. These therapies represent a new frontier in treating diabetes by tailoring treatment to individual patients’ genetic and metabolic profiles to achieve more effective and sustainable outcomes.
Diabetes Management in Smokers and the Role of smoking Cessation and Harm Reduction
A dedicated session will focus on the challenges of managing diabetes in smokers. The session will explore how smoking exacerbates diabetic complications and complicates management. Experts will also discuss tobacco harm reduction strategies, including the emerging role of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs) in helping diabetic smokers reduce harm, and the implications of these alternatives on diabetes management. The session will also include insights into pharmacological treatments, behavioral strategies, and digital health interventions, all of which can be personalized to improve outcomes for smokers with diabetes.
Challenging Clinical Cases
The event will feature a session dedicated to challenging clinical cases in diabetes management. Experts will present complex cases involving co-morbidities, such as heart disease, kidney complications, and obesity, and discuss the latest clinical approaches to managing these issues. This interactive session will provide valuable learning opportunities for clinicians facing similar challenges in their practice.
“We are excited to host this event, which will allow experts from around the world to share their knowledge and experience in tackling the complex challenges of diabetes care,” said Professor Riccardo Polosa, Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Catania. “By discussing innovative therapies, personalized medicine, and harm reduction strategies, we aim to improve patient care and outcomes on a global scale.”
The event promises to be a significant step forward in advancing the conversation about personalized medicine and harm reduction in diabetes care. With increasing rates of diabetes worldwide, this meeting will serve as a platform for developing evidence-based strategies to combat diabetes and its associated complications.
